Temporary Asssitance for Needy Families (TANF)

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) is a nationally-funded program that provides cash assistance and services to low income families with children, or to pregnant women. Generally, those who qualify for TANF may receive benefits for 5 years or less.

Most decisions about benefits are made by local governments and TANF benefits may differ in your state. Many TANF programs provide these common benefits:

  • Cash assistance Basic needs like food, clothing, and shelter
  • Child Care
  • Work Support and Employment Programs
  • Family planning, counseling, and parenting education
  • Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services
  • Education
  • Transportation

You may qualify for TANF if you are a member of a family that:

  • Has at least one child
  • Has at least one adult that is meeting specific work requirements (such as working a certain number of hours, or going to work after completing a training program)
  • Has a low income
